The gag grouper can grow up to 4 feet in length, weight is common to 40 pounds, may attain weights exceeding 100 pounds. Typically has olive or gray body coloration with black blotches and brassy spots. It is usually solitary and skittish until spawning time, when it gathers in masses. It is found in tropical or subtropical waters, like off the coast of the Carolina’s.
They are primarily caught with hooks-and-line, but are also caught by diving spear-fisherman. They are found off-shore around rocky bottoms, reefs, ship wreck and drop off walls in water over 60 feet deep.
Grouper is a lean fish with a firm, mildly flavored flesh. The gag grouper is quite tasty and an important part of our local fishing industry.
Fun Fact: All Gag Grouper are born females, and some later change into males to breed.
